Marehay Show 2009

Following the success of Marehay Show 2008, Marehay Show 2009 took place at three venues around the village; The Miners Welfare on Derby Road, Marehay Chapel on Warmwells Lane and The Kestrel at the top of Upper Marehay Road. Our ambitions to hold the show on Marehay Recreation Ground were still dampened, literally, by the ground's drainage problem. The Trust are now campaigning to get this improved so that Marehay villagers have a ground they can make good use of all year round, and hopefully in the future we can use this as the venue for the annual show.

The show raised £1200 split equally between the British Heart Foundation’s local appeal ‘The Heart of Derby’ and Ripley hospice Maple Leaf House for those with Alzheimer’s and dementia. The Heart of Derby Appeal aimed to raise £107,000 to fund a new 3D echocardiograph machine with an additional toe probe for the cardiology department at Royal Derby Hospital – where nearly 50,000 heart patients are treated each year. These charities were both suggested at the AGM open meeting earlier in the year.

New competition classes were introduced including best berry fruit, best flower arrangement in a glass, heaviest cabbage and a very popular scarecrow competition. We were amazed that this class attracted over 40 entries - not bad for the first year! Thank you to everyone who participated in this and we hope even more villager will take part in future years.

The show day was rounded off with a Barn Dance held in the evening at the Miners Welfare, where donated produce from the day were auctioned off.
