History

The first Marehay Show took place in 1958. The shows ran each year but temporarily ceased in 1972 and 1973. The show was then reformed in 1974 thanks to Alan Bennett, show secretary. Alan was very enthusiastic and persuaded three young gardeners from Allissa Avenue to join the show committee. These were Alan Machin, Bruce Slack and Trevor Bonsall, together with Alf Winters and Eric Pritchett. The Holly Bush was the centre for the meetings, and the shows were held on the Cricket Ground adjacent to the Holly Bush – now Poppyfields. The show was reformed to try and retain a community spirit in Marehay and to promote horticulture so that the best local produce could be seen and enjoyed by everyone.

The last Marehay Show was on Sunday 20th August 1978. Admission was just 15p (children and OAPs, 5p). The event was supported by Perard Engineering Sports and Social Club. The show categories included: Vegetables, Dahlias, Roses, Chrysanthemums, Home Produce and a Children’s Section.

We are continually collecting any photographs taken at previous shows, as well as any old photographs of Marehay, so we can create a photographic display on show days.

If you are willing to let us borrow any photographs, or if you can remember what the old shows were like, we’d love you to share your memories with us. Any photos borrowed will be copied and the originals returned. Please contact Chris on 0784 101 1262 if you can help.
